Shayna's Story
Shayna was an amazing, bubbly girl. She would light up a room with her bright smile. She was an amazing friend, peer, student, family member. However, she found a Russian dating site called Badoo, where she met a 17 year old boy, Michael Gavin Campbell. Their chats moved from Badoo to Facebook Messenger. After a few weeks of chatting, on October 3, 2019, Michael drove to the truck stop in Moorcroft, Wyoming, across from Shayna's school, where he picked her up on her lunch break. From there he drove her 90 miles (about an hour and 15 minutes) away to his mom's house in Sturgis, South Dakota, where he lived. The next day they got into an argument, and he decided the way to win that was to shoot her once in the head. He then proceeded to hide her in his basement bedroom closet, where she was found the night of Monday, October 7 after DCI obtained a probable cause search warrant. Michael tried to plead not guilty by reason of insanity to alternating 1st and 2nd degree murder, but after being found sane, Shayna's family agreed to a plea deal that includes: Guilty plea of 1st degree Manslaughter, no appeals, no parole, no contact with her family, and 55 years in the State Penitentiary.
Please, if you, or you know someone, who is talking to people online and want to meet the person, take a trusted adult (parent, sister, cousin, friend, or friend's family even) and always meet in public! Meet at a place like McDonald's, never in a mall or park, as there is too much space for someone to disappear into at those places.
